Keeping an Eye on Your Money
Did you know?*
- Tax preparers charge $100 on average to prepare your federal and state tax returns and to help you claim the
EITC and other tax credits.
- 'Rapid Refunds' are really high-interest loans - a tax preparer gives you your tax refund in advance in exchange
for a higher fee.
- On average, in 2001, a person entitled to a $1,500 refund from the EITC paid $195 (13% of this refund) in fees to
tax preparers.
- By getting free tax preparation assistance, you keep 100% of your EITC refund and don't have to pay any fees to
tax preparers.

Note: Both the VITA and AARP
tax assistance programs are designed to provide free tax assistance to low and
moderate income taxpayers.
AARP tax assistant volunteers give preference to taxpayers age 60 and older, although they work
with all taxpayers as time allows. VITA tax assistance volunteers operate
on a first come first serve basis and work with taxpayers of
all ages.
All tax assistant volunteers are trained to assist
with Earned Income Tax Credit.
