What is it? Mortgage counseling is a free, confidential service provided by HUD certified housing counselors at community based non-profit organizations. Housing counselors can help you if you are behind on your mortgage payments, or if you anticipate that you may fall behind on your payments. Housing counselors will help you evaluate your finances and mortgage, as well as help you resolve major home credit issues. This often involves working with your bank or lender to re-negotiate loan terms. Counselors can also help if you have been affected by predatory lending, to find alternative housing, develop loss mitigation strategies, assist with refinancing loans, and get legal assistance. The counselors can help you with the full spectrum of mortgage problems. What do I get? Counselors provide one-on-one and/or group counseling sessions that will help you with any mortgage related issues. They will work with you until you receive the most favorable resolution to your mortgage problems. How long do I get it? Housing counselors will assist you as long as you need help with a mortgage or foreclosure related problem. |
