What is it? WIC is a federal program that provides pregnant women, infants, and children with nutritious food and nutrition education in order to improve their health and diet. You can get WIC even if you are receiving Food Stamps. What do you get? The exact amount of WIC allotment depends on your household size and income. WIC gives you vouchers in three month installments that you can use to buy food at over 1,100 participating grocery stores (commonly known as WIC vendors) in Tennessee. Additionally, nutritionists and registered dietitians are available to teach proper nutrition and to counsel individuals with special dietary needs. Breastfeeding classes and support are available to all new mothers. How long do you get it? Every 6 months you will have to re-certify for WIC. Your local WIC office will let you know that you are due for re-certification and will schedule a re-certification appointment. |
